I've been in Japan for a long time. When I first arrived here in 1992 it was rare to see another foreigner. These days there are a lot more foreign tourists than I have ever seen. It is probably because of the 2020 Olympics.

The government and others are trying to get tourists to visit Japan. All over Japan companies are making special deals so tourists will visit. Foreigners can get special deals on plane and train tickets. They can get discounts on hotels and even toll booths on highways. Not only that, but there is a lot more information written in English and other languages now. So it is a great time for foreigners to visit Japan. This is a great time for you as well. More than ever before you will have the opportunity to speak English because there are so many foreigners here.

There are two things you need to do. If you want to speak with foreigners, you will probably have to speak to them first. If you see someone in a train station looking up at the map of the train lines, you can talk to them, "Are you okay? Do you know which train to take?" They will either say, "I'm okay, thanks," or "No, I'm lost. Can you help me?" I do it all the time and meet a lot of interesting people. You can do it, too.

The other thing you need to do is prepare for these conversations with foreigners. The Enjoy Simple English radio show can help you with that. The trick to learning a language is to study every day and we have five stories for you every week. They will all be useful for you, but one series in particular will be very useful for talking with foreigners. Our Monday stories are about a young Japanese man and his foreign friend traveling around Japan as street performers. These stories will show you what it is like to see Japan through a foreigner's eyes. Enjoy!
